According to a recent report by the Express, Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has revealed that he wants to seal a return back to his former club FC Basel in the future. It is believed that the Gunners sensation is eager to go back to his homeland and play in Switzerland once again someday.
In a recent interview with Basellandschaftliche Zeitung, Xhaka was asked whether he fancies a move back to Basel to which he replied, “Definitely,”
“My career started here and there it is a goal, actually, my dream to return someday.
“That certainly won’t be the case at 28, I’ll be honest.
“It’ll probably be more like Alex Frei, who’s the best example of how to do it.
“He came back once he was in his thirties, but still performed and helped FCB win a few titles.
“Of course, the expectations are high when you come back again, but it is clearly a dream.”
Granit Xhaka: Arsenal’s Midfield General
Xhaka primarily operates as a holding midfielder and can also fill in at left-back. Despite making a few errors at the back during this campaign, the Swiss talent is still a quality midfielder who distributes the ball well at the centre of the pitch. The 26-year-old also has a knack from scoring goals as evidenced by his stunning free-kick against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last month.
The Basel youth product has made 13 appearances for the Gunners this season, scoring two goals while creating one assist in all competitions. Xhaka is also vastly experienced at the international level as he represented the Swiss national team in 68 matches and had two goals for his country to his name.
Should Arsenal Fans Be Concerned After His Recent Revelation?
His recent words shouldn’t worry the Arsenal supporters too much as the Swiss international only intends to go back to his home country in a few years time when he is in his 30’s. For now, the North London outfit should concentrate on getting the best out of him as he is currently playing at his prime.
However, Xhaka has still shown signs in recent weeks that he has some moments during matches when he suffers from a drop in concentration which could lead towards an occasional mistake be made by him. Hence, the Swiss talent needs to improve his game if he wants to keep his place as a regular starter in Emery’s first-team.
