According to a recent report by the Times, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen is in a contract standoff with the club after talks between both parties came to a stalemate. It is understood that the Danish international is about to embark upon the final year of his Spurs contract.
Some sources have also revealed that the Danish prospect is earning a weekly wage of £70,000. However, that number is still far below than what the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Moussa Sissoko are making every week.
Eriksen’s Underpar Season So Far
Eriksen has missed a lot of matches this season due to injury. Even when he is on the pitch, the Dane has failed to hit the heights of last season and is also struggling to chip in with goals from midfield. However, his creativity has been second to none in the Premier League which makes him an invaluable asset for Spurs as they look to push on and challenge for some major trophies this season.
The Middelfart born talent has featured in 13 matches for the North London giants this season, scoring one goal and grabbing four assists across all competitions.
What Does The Danish Talent Add To Pochettino’s Team?
The 26-year-old midfielder has proven his worth at the highest level and can be considered as one of the best creative playmakers in the Premier League. He can read the game well and has an eye for a telling pass in the attacking third. Eriksen is also quite versatile and can operate in multiple positions across the midfield.
What Should Be Pochettino’s Play Here?
The Dane has shown in the past that he can score and create goals on a consistent basis which is why Spurs should do everything in their power to hang on to his services for the long-term. There are not many players like Eriksen in European football so it would be a massive mistake for Tottenham not to offer him an increase in his wages when other teams are willing to pay over the odds to keep hold of their star players.
Mauricio Pochettino needs to act as a mediator between the club and the player to work towards a solution as the Argentine manager simply cannot sit back and witness one of his best players run down his contract.
