Everton have made decent progress this season after their disastrous outing in the last term and are looking to make it into the top six or seven teams so as to qualify for the European championships. Marco Silva has been doing well as a manager and is hoping for a fruitful season in his first one as the Everton main man.
The Toffees have a decent squad at their disposal, especially in the defensive department, which has been performing well since the start of the season. However, reports are indicating towards the fact that the Merseyside club might look to add another central defender to their lineup and they have Chris Smalling on the top their target list.
The Manchester United centre-back is out of contract at the end of this season, until the Red Devils exercise the option to extend his contract by one more year. However, if he leaves the club next summer, it would be an excellent opportunity for the Toffees to rope in the England international for free.
However, with players like Kurt Zouma, Michael Keane and Yerry Mina already performing brilliantly for the club this season, it is unnecessary for Marco Silva to invest in a central defender at this moment. Obviously, it would be great to get a player like Smalling in the side for free, but it is not something that the Toffees need right now.
After the departure of Ashley Williams and with veteran Phil Jagielka taking a back seat, the defensive partnership of Zouma and Keane at the heart of the Everton defence has been nothing less than a revelation. Yerry Mina, who did not get ample opportunities to showcase his skills due to injuries, also had a perfect game against the west London giants Chelsea and was declared the Man of the Match.
In this scenario, there is currently no need for the Toffees to go in for another defender. Instead, they can look to invest in the other departments like midfield and attack, where the impact has been lesser for them this season so far. Especially with Cenk Tosun not in form and Richarlison having to play out of position as a striker, there is the need for a top quality finisher in the side and Everton should look to bring in someone to lead their attack in January rather than a defender.
