Celtic have often struggled in the past few years to compete with Premier League clubs financially, and that mostly has to do with the kind of revenue which both the leagues generate. Premier League clubs receive huge amounts in Tv revenue, whether it is domestically or at a global scale, and the Scottish Premiership often fails to create such kind of moolah. Therefore it is no surprise that the top flight English clubs can prize away top talents from Celtic and with the January transfer window approaching, Rodgers could once again be in a sticky position if top-flight clubs come after his players.
Here are three players who could be wanted by Premier League club come the winter transfer period.
Dedryck Boyata
A very obvious name to start with as everyone knows what went by in the summer window. After an impressive performance in the World Cup, the Belgian wanted a move to a bigger league and Fulham had reportedly put in a £9m bid for him. However, Celtic were having none of it, and they kept hold of their main centre-half. After a bit of pulling and tugging for the initial month, the player soon sorted out his differences and had put in some top performance at the back.
However, come the January window things can again go downhill and we feel Rodgers shouldn’t be holding on this time if Boyata fetches close to the amount which was offered by Fulham earlier. Though he first needs to make sure on whether Filip Benkovic would be recalled back by Leicester City. If yes, then keeping hold of Boyata should be the right way to go for the Hoops.
Kieran Tierney
Quite simply one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership can once again be a centre of attention in the January window. Everton and Manchester United were linked with him in the summer, but we don’t expect both those teams to come after him once again.
Everton signed Lucas Digne for the left back role, and the former Barcelona star has done well at his new club. And Luke Shaw has enjoyed a resurgence under Mourinho this season. However, this doesn’t mean that Tierney won’t be targetted by other clubs. His ability up the pitch as well as while defending should keep him as one of the hottest properties in Scottish football.
James Forrest
Forrest signed a new contract in September only, but the Premier League clubs can blow away Celtic with a big offer. The 27-year-old is in the prime of his career and has been one of the top performers so far this season. The winger can thrive in the Premier League and could be a smart signing for quite a few clubs.
