According to a recent report by the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to make an offer in the region of £35m to lure Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella to North London during this winter transfer window. It is believed that Spurs are looking for a long-term replacement for Mousa Dembele, who suffered a serious injury against Wolves earlier this month, and Barella fits the bill perfectly.
The Rapid Rise Of Nicolo Barella
Barella is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Italian football after he put in some fabulous performances for Cagliari over the past couple of years. The Italian starlet has managed to establish himself as a first-team regular for the Serie A club this season.
The 21-year-old has made 13 appearances for Cagliari this term and has one goal to his name which he scored in a 1-0 win over Atlanta back in September.
The Serie A wonderkid played a crucial role in helping his current club retain their top-flight status last season which goes to show how influential he has been for Rolando Maran’s side in recent times. Hence, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a big club like Tottenham are looking to land him in January.
Barella has represented his country at every youth level from Under-15 to Under-21 and has also managed to secure two international caps for the Italian national team.
What Will Barella Add To Pochettino’s Side?
The Cagliari born prospect is pretty quick and sharp with his feet which helps him make some nice breakaway runs behind the opposition defence. He also has a fantastic passing range and can distribute the ball immaculately while operating in a central role in midfield. However, the Italian sensation needs to develop a strong upper body if he wants to test himself in the Premier League someday.
Is He The Right Fit For Spurs?
Mauricio Pochettino would do well to prize him away from Cagliari as Barella has the potential to become a world-class talent in his position. He can replace Dembele at the heart of the Tottenham midfield and would add a lot of competition for places with the Spurs squad.
However, paying a fee around £35m for a young talent can always be a risk but it could pay dividends in the long-run.
