According to recent reports, Tottenham Hotspur are set to clash heads with Borussia Dortmund in pursuit of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez’s signature. It is believed that Spurs are hoping to land the La Liga sensation who has already scored six goals while creating four assists in 10 league matches so far.
The Rapid Rise Of Maxi Gomez In Spain
Gomez has formed one of the most lethal striking partnerships in the Spanish top-flight while playing alongside Iago Aspas. The Celta duo have started this campaign in fine form, and their incredible goal-scoring contributions have helped the La Liga club steer clear of the relegation zone for the time being.
The Highlights Of Gomez’s Career So Far
The Uruguayan prospect grew up playing football in his homeland and graduated from the Defensor academy before sealing a move to Spain to play for Celta Vigo in the summer of 2017. Since his arrival at the Estadio Municipal de Balaídos, the 22-year-old has made 49 appearances for Celta, finding the back of the net 24 times while also providing nine assists across multiple competitions. He has also earned nine international caps for the Uruguayan national team but is yet to register a goal while representing his country.
His exceptional record in Spain has not gone unnoticed by other clubs as Spurs and Dortmund looks set to battle it out for his services in the coming months.
What Will The Uruguayan Forward Add To Pochettino’s Side?
Gomez is not that pacey, but he can dribble with the ball quite well using his strength and power. The South American prospect is a fox inside the opposition box and is a real poacher in front of goal. The Uruguayan international has a knack for finding space and takes up good positions in the final third which makes him a menace to deal with for the opposition defenders.
However, his distribution and link up play need to improve if he wants to take his game to the next level. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino could be the ideal manager to get the best out of his talents if he ends up making a move to North London.
Should Spurs Go All Out For Him?
Tottenham are in dire need of a reliable back-up for Harry Kane, and Gomez has all the talents to fill in that role perfectly. Hence, Pochettino should step up his chase of the La Liga forward as he has the potential to be a Premier League star in a few years’ time.
However, any potential move would also mean that the Uruguayan forward might get limited game time if he decides to move to England to play second-fiddle to Kane.
