Latest reports from the Portuguese media suggests that Leeds United scouts were present in attendance to watch Porto’s win over Braga last weekend. It is not yet clear which player the Whites might be tracking, but it should give the club fans some hope that a signing could be on the radar in January after Marcelo Bielsa recently claimed that he is satisfied with his current squad.
The Argentine manager said that his injured players coming back from injury would be like new signings (Gaetano Berardi, Luke Ayling, Izzy Brown and Patrick Bamford) and he feels that it should be enough to keep the Whites’ promotion run on the track.
However, West Bromwich Albion showed glaring weaknesses in United’s squad, and it would be naive and foolish to think that the Whites would be able to get automatic promotion to the Premier League without adding any new players in January.
Braga and Porto are currently the top two sides in Portugal at the moment and apart from Leeds, quite a few scouts from different clubs were reportedly present. What would delight the Whites fans is that the club could be after some top target from the Portuguese giants.
With the January transfer window fast approaching, the club should already have a list of players which they could target. Reports earlier came out that Leeds could look to add reinforcements in three positions viz, a striker, winger and a centre back. However, the latest interview from Bielsa was contradictory though he did say that if the club hierarchy feels that they need to go after players, then he would consider it.
The Primeira Liga might not be considered as one of the top leagues of the world, but over the years the league is known as a breeding ground for talents. Jan Oblak, Nemanja Matic, David Luiz, Ramires, Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho (to name a few) all gained prominence in the Primeira Liga, and the likes of Porto, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon etc. have made millions by selling their players to bigger leagues and bigger clubs.
Hopefully, the Whites would be able to find their hidden gem in January. The club has had a good start to the Championship and even though they have gone off the boil in the past month or so, they are in with a good shout for the automatic promotions spots. The club hierarchy and the staff should consider this as a big opportunity and should do everything in their means to help their side in January by bringing in reinforcements.
