According to a recent report by Football.London, Ajax have shed some light on the future of Frenkie de Jong and have accepted that they would be powerless to stop him from leaving next summer. The Dutch club’s sporting director Marc Overmars has dismissed speculation linking the midfielder with a January exit but revealed that a potential move in the summer was entirely possible.
In a recent interview, the former Arsenal wide man said, “We are realistic. After this season, we will lose two or three players,”
“They have such a high level that we cannot keep them. However, it’s important for us to reinvest the money and replace the players who leave at the end of the season as best as possible.”
“I think it’s well known that nobody will leave Ajax in the January transfer window, there’s no chance, although any offer may arrive on the table.
“I don’t hide the fact there’s interest from big clubs for various players but the important thing is that the players aren’t the ones pushing. They only want to have a good season at Ajax and it’s logical given their age.”
Some sources had earlier claimed that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in securing the services of the talented £40m-rated Ajax midfielder last summer but a move failed to materialise back then. However, Spurs could reignite their interest in the player especially after they sent scouts to catch him in action at the Amsterdam Arena.
What Will de Jong Add To Pochettino’s Team?
De Jong has featured in 17 matches for the Eredivisie giants this season and had two goals to his name across all competitions. At the tender age of 21, the Dutch prospect is an excellent dribbler with the ball and has an eye for a telling pass from midfield. He is also quite versatile and can play as a centre-back as well which makes him an ideal asset for Ajax.
The potential addition of de Jong would undoubtedly bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options at North London. Spurs already have a plethora of options in midfield but with Mousa Dembele currently at the twilight years of his career, bringing in a promising youngster could help the North London outfit build for a bigger and brighter future at White Hart Lane.
Should Spurs Go For The Dutch Prospect?
This recent revelation that Ajax could be open to selling their prized asset would be a massive boost for Spurs’ chances of landing the player next summer. Hence, Pochettino should do everything in his power to make this move happen.
