Rangers might have signed as many as 15 players in the summer window, but there is one area where they fell short, and that is the striker’s department. Kyle Lafferty has done well in patches, but the signing of Umar Sadiq hasn’t paid off as of now.
Lack of depth and quality in the striking option was one of the primary reasons why many feel the Gers lost against Aberdeen in the League Cup semi-final. The League Cup was considered by many as the only opportunity for a silverware for Steven Gerrard this season.
Therefore the club is likely to be in the market to sign a striker in January and recently former Rangers loanee Jason Cummings seems like an ideal choice. The Nottingham Forest striker is currently on loan to League One outfit Peterborough United where he is in a rich vein of form as he found the back of the net six times and assisted four times in 13 appearances. It seems clear that the forward is unwanted at Forest as Aitor Karanka does not seem to rate him too highly.
The Gers are heavily dependent on Alfredo Morelos at the moment and the club should definitely be on the lookout for a long-term striker as Lafferty is also in his thirties. The Colombian ace is also going to look for a move out of Ibrox if big clubs come calling and he has already claimed that moving to the Premier League is his dream. The way he has been going, an offer from the south doesn’t look too far off, and the Bears could be in a precarious situation if they don’t prepare for the contingency of Morelos leaving.
Cummings is on a year-long loan at Peterborough, and it is unlikely that Forest would recall him as he has gotten some good game time in the English third tier. So Steven Gerrard might have to wait until the next season to get his hands on this 23-year-old striker.
Last season, he scored six goals in 18 appearances for the Gers, and now it seems like the club should have tried to make a permanent move for him in the summer. Cummings has a good amount of experience in the Scottish League as he was with the Hibs earlier and had a more than decent goal tally as he found the back of the net 71 times in 149 appearances.
The 23-year-old has even represented Scotland twice, and he could be the ideal long-term replacement for Morelos. Hopefully, Gerrard also feels the same way, and a deal for him is done before an exit for Morelos is negotiated.
