Tottenham Hotspur played hosts to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium earlier tonight hoping to earn a positive result in front of their home supporters. Spurs made a sloppy start to the match and got punished when Riyad Mahrez smashed in City’s opening goal in the 6th minute. The North London outfit struggled to retain the ball but still looked a threat on the counter.
The second half began a bit different with the home side enjoying a bit more possession. However, they couldn’t find the precious equaliser despite carving out some good chances to score. The match ended with a final score of 1-0 in favour of Man City.
Let’s take a look at how each Tottenham Hotspur player fared during the contest against the Citizens.
GK: Hugo Lloris – 5/10
The Frenchman was sloppy with his distribution but was lucky to get away with most of his errors. He couldn’t do much about the City goal with Mahrez having all the time in the world to place his shot which beat Lloris.
RB: Kieran Trippier – 4/10
His error let Sterling through with a lot of space behind the Tottenham backline in the lead-up to Mahrez’s goal. However, he recovered well and put on a strong shift in the second half.
CB: Davinson Sánchez – 6.5/10
He looked solid at the back and dealt with the threat of Sergio Aguero quite well.
CB: Toby Alderweireld – 6/10
The Belgian had a few nervy moments during the game but made some crucial clearances to keep Spurs in the contest.
LB: Ben Davies – 5.5/10
He had a mixed game at left-back for the North London giants. Davies tried his best to deal with the pace and trickery of Kyle Walker and Mahrez. However, he failed to provide an outlet for Spurs down the left flank.
CM: Eric Dier – 5/10
The English talent looked average at best and was dominated by the City midfielders.
CM: Mousa Dembélé – 7/10
The Belgian midfielder distributed the ball well and got some joy running at the Man City players. He also made some well-timed challenges during the game to break down City’s fluid brand of football.
RM: Moussa Sissoko – 8/10
The French powerhouse used his pace quite well and was never afraid to run behind the City backline. He was by far Spurs’ biggest threat going forward in the first half and showed a lot of energy and enthusiasm at the middle of the park.
CAM: Erik Lamela – 5/10
The Argentine playmaker tried his best to link up play in the opposition half. However, he squandered the home team’s biggest opportunity of the game in the second half when he failed to hit the target from close range.
LM: Lucas Moura – 5.5/10
The Brazilian played some nice through balls but was not able to get himself into the game in the attacking third.
ST: Harry Kane – 5/10
The English centre-forward was dominated by the City defenders and hardly got a sniff at goal in the second half.
Substitutes:
CM: Harry Winks – 7/10
The Tottenham midfielder put on a nice little cameo in front of the England manager Gareth Southgate who was in the stands at Wembley. He showed a lot of effort and enthusiasm to try and help his team find a way back into the game.
CAM: Dele Alli – 7/10
He brought a lot of quality up top and did well to set up Lamela who skyed his shot from close range.
CM: Christian Eriksen – 5/10
The Danish midfielder didn’t do enough on the pitch after coming on for the final 10 minutes of the encounter.
