Everton took on Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier this evening hoping to earn a result on the road. The Toffees started a bit sloppy and conceded in the 27th minute when Paul Pogba scored after initially missing his penalty. Marco Silva’s side fought back but could only go into half-time with a deficit of one goal.
The Blues of Merseyside started the second half looking to cause some problems for the United defenders, but Jose Mourinho’s men soon managed to score the second goal through Anthony Martial’s classy finish from long range. However, Everton found a way back into the game after Gylfi Sigurdsson converted from the spot, but it wasn’t enough for the Toffees as they lost 2-1 on the day.
Let’s take a look at how each Everton player performed during the contest against the Red Devils.
GK: Jordan Pickford – 8/10
The English keeper saved the Pogba penalty but couldn’t do much about the rebound. He also made a number of world-class saves to keep the Toffees in the game.
RB: Seamus Coleman – 5/10
He was a good outlet for the Blues going forward but struggled to neutralise the threat of Martial when facing his own goal.
CB: Michael Keane – 6/10
The Everton centre-half was aerially dominant, but his distribution from the back was not up to his usual standards.
CB: Kurt Zouma – 5.5/10
The former Chelsea defensive ace struggled to play out from the back when the game got stretched and made an unfortunate mistake which let Martial through on goal. Otherwise, it was another solid performance from him at the back.
LB: Lucas Digne – 6/10
His deliveries from set-pieces were on the mark, but his distribution from open-play was often inaccurate. It was a strange day out for the Toffees full-back.
CM: André Gomes – 6/10
He protected the Everton back four well but was not able to stand out from the rest with his performance at the centre of the park today.
CM: Idrissa Gueye – 5/10
He got booked in the first half and was also guilty of giving away a penalty. Not the best day out for the hard-working Everton midfielder.
RM: Theo Walcott – 5/10
The English speedster started the encounter very brightly, but his decision making was woeful in the attacking third. Walcott was nothing more than a spectator in the latter stages of the second half and was rightfully subbed.
CAM: Gylfi Sigurdsson – 6.5/10
The Icelandic international struggled to get himself into the game but stepped up to convert from the spot which gave Everton some hope going into the final quarter of the contest.
LM: Bernard – 4.5/10
The Brazilian dribbler got a fantastic chance to score when he initially did well to round off David De Gea, but he was at fault for missing an open goal as it could have changed the whole dynamic of the game.
ST: Richarlison – 6/10
He did well to earn a penalty but was overall a lonely figure up top for the away side.
Substitutes:
LM: Ademola Lookman – 5/10
He didn’t have his finishing boots on and squandered some good chances to test De Gea.
ST: Cenk Tosun – 5/10
The Turkish forward was not able to get the decisive equaliser after coming off the bench.
ST: Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 5/10
He tried to make an impact inside the United penalty box but was denied by some resolute defending by Mourinho’s defenders.
