According to a recent report by the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope ahead of a potential move in the summer. It is understood that Spurs are big admirers of the English goalie’s talents and are monitoring the goalkeeping situation at the Turf Moor with the Clarets currently facing a conundrum as they possess three good shot-stoppers who are capable of starting in Sean Dyche’s first-team.
Pope Is Not A Guaranteed Starter For Burnley Anymore
Joe Hart is a regular starter for Sean Dyche’s side, but both Tom Heaton and Nick Pope would soon stake their claim to start in goal for the Lancashire club. This could give rise to an ideal opportunity for Spurs as they look to swoop in for Pope if he fails to nail down a starting berth under Dyche. The 26-year-old is currently nursing his way back from a severe injury which he sustained against Aberdeen in the UEFA Europa League back in July.
The Rise Of Nick Pope
The Cambridge-born talent has worked his way up from non-league football and was one of the stars of Burnley’s excellent season last term. His heroics for the Clarets earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. However, Pope has lost his first-team place to Joe Hart at the Lancashire club this season due to his shoulder injury and would look to reclaim his position when he completes his recovery in the coming weeks.
What Will The English Keeper Add To Pochettino’s Team?
The former Charlton talent is a well-rounded keeper who is equally adept with his diving, handling, reflexes, and positioning. However, his distribution skills have a lot of room for improvement while Pope is also not a modern-day sweeper keeper as he lacks pace.
Tottenham’s current first-choice goalie, Hugo Lloris had made some uncharacteristic errors in high-profile matches as evidenced by his sending off away at PSV Eindhoven when Spurs were in pole position to secure a victory on Wednesday evening. The Frenchman’s mistake ultimately cost the North London side a win which could potentially see them miss out on a place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.
A Good Move For Spurs?
The addition of Pope will undoubtedly add competition for places within Pochettino’s squad which is why it would be a shrewd signing if Tottenham can pull off such a deal in the near future.
