The signing of AS Roma striker Umar Sadiq hasn’t paid off as of now, and we might see Rangers being interested in a striker in the future to provide cover to the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty. Recently, former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor claimed that he would be making a move to the Scottish League if Celtic or Rangers come calling for him. The fact that he is a free agent makes him worth considering.
Agbonlahor recently said,”It’s been a difficult decision. Having been at Villa all my career, I did not want to play for another Championship club, I appreciate the offers, it just didn’t feel right. As for the SPL, unless it’s one of the big couple of clubs, to be honest, that doesn’t excite me.”
The striker is currently a free agent and it is not clear how fit he must be to take on a challenge straight away. Agbonlahor recently pulled on a Celtic jersey during a charity game in September and claimed that watching Celtic fans gave him goosebumps.
The striker has got plenty of experience including playing in the English Premier League. He has ended his stint at Villa Park by becoming their all-time top goal scorer, and the 32-year-old has the distinction of playing for the Three Lions as well.
Agbonlahor wouldn’t want to be a second or third choice striker at a club and we don’t feel he is better than two strikers that Gers currently have. It is always good to have a young second or third choice striker as he would be keen to prove his worth and showcase his talent to the world. Whereas the more experienced one, who has seen it all in their career, might lack that determination to push for the starting spot.
Gerrard might have called out on Sadiq for his poor displays in training but recently the tide seems to have turned as the manager looked satisfied with his recent displays. So all maybe still not lost with the young Nigerian striker and he could perhaps go on to have an impact in the second half of the season.
On the other hand, Agbonlahor’s best days are behind him and he may be looking at one final flourish before he can call a day on his footballing career. Even in his heydays, the forward was guilty of not putting in a significant shift when things didn’t go right for him and thus it would be expected for Gerrard and Co to steer clear from this move.
