Rangers might have made 15 signings in the summer as Gerrard went through a complete overhaul of the squad but after the sale of Josh Windass to Wigan Athletic, the Gers have lacked an out and out attacking midfielder. The likes of Ovie Ejaria and Scott Arfield have filled in those positions from time to time, but one feels that a more natural and creative no.10 could take this team to another level.
One such player is Peterborough United’s Marcus Maddison who has set the League One on fire with his displays. The creative midfielder last season helped the Posh by contributing with 12 goals and a whopping 23 assists in all competitions. What would make him a big hit at Ibrox is that recently the 25-year-old was asked on social media to pick one team between the two Glaswegian giants and Maddison went on to say that he had been a ‘Rangers man’.
What makes matter more interesting is that in the summer Maddison was transfer listed by Peterborough. Maybe the club wanted to make some good money after such impressive displays last season. But nothing materialised in the summer even though there were various interests in him. We believe Gerrard should look at this 25-year old playmaker as an option in January.
He might not have started this season in the most glittering fashion as he is yet to score but he has already three assists to his name in 10 appearances, and his side are sitting on the second spot in the English third tier. Currently, most of Rangers’ attacking outlet come from their wingers, and we have seen they have struggled when the opponents have stifled them to use that option.
The 25-year-old started his youth career with Newcastle United before he was moved on as he wasn’t considered to be that big a talent at that time. He even had a spell with Scottish outfit St. Johnstone in 2013 but failed to make an appearance for them.
The Bears have plenty of options in midfield, but not many can carve open defences when things aren’t going right. Most of the midfielders are industrious, and hard workers with decent passing abilities but Maddison can turn out to be a game changer.
With the new revelation of him being a Rangers fan, the club shouldn’t require a lot of persuasion. However, if clubs from Championship or Premier League come calling then that could turn out to be a big problem for Gerrard. But he should keep track of this talented English playmaker who is one of the brightest attacking players in the English lower divisions.
