According to a recent report by the Scottish Sun, Everton are among a number of clubs looking to snap up David Bates from Hamburg. The former Rangers youngster grew up playing football for Raith Rovers before securing loan spells at East Stirling and Brechin City. Bates finally managed to get a move to Rangers at the start of 2017. However, he failed to prove his worth last season and was released by the Light Blues earlier this summer.
The Rise Of David Bates In Bundesliga 2
Bates joined Hamburg on a free transfer during the summer transfer window and since then, the 22-year-old has put in a string of excellent performances at the Volksparkstadion which has not gone unnoticed by other clubs.
He has already made eight appearances for Hamburg this season and has helped his new employers climb to the 5th spot of the Bundesliga 2 standings. The German outfit have built a stable platform and are now in with a decent chance to clinch a promotion spot at the end of this current campaign. It is expected that Bates would undoubtedly play an integral part if they are to earn a place back to the German top-flight.
What Will The Scottish Defender Add To Marco Silva’s Side?
The Scottish talent primarily operates as a centre-back but can also be deployed in the right-back position if required. He is aerially dominant and is a good header of the ball. The 22-year-old has also learnt to develop his defensive attributes while in Germany but is still unproven at the highest level.
Bates has a lot of promise, and if he can improve and take his game to the next level, then Everton should consider making a move for him. Until then, it is better for the Merseyside giants to opt for someone who can be a more immediate solution to their defensive problems. At 22, the Scotsman is still not ready to test the waters of the Premier League. Hence, staying put at Hamburg might be his best option to prove his worth.
Should Everton Move In For Bates?
Marco Silva needs to concentrate on bringing in other players who know what English football is all about. Thus, we can conclude that the Merseyside club should not go for Bates right now. However, they should monitor his progress over the next few years and then make a call on recruiting him.
