Latest reports from Chronicle Live suggests that Newcastle United sources have played down a move for Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers as a possible replacement for Rafael Benitez. The Spanish tactician is under fire after a run of poor results where they have lost 7 of their opening 9 games and are still looking for their first win of the season. Not too long ago, it was reported that the Hoops had slapped a £9m compensation fee on Rodgers in case any of the Premier League clubs came calling. Maybe that could have done the trick as it seems like the Magpies are not going to go after Celtic’s boss.
The work which Rodgers has done in the past two seasons has undoubtedly raised his stock, and this is not the first time when he has been linked with a move to an English club. Not too long ago various reports claimed that Aston Villa were keen on the Northern Irish manager, but Rodgers himself busted those rumours.
He had said,”For me, I’m happy here at Celtic. My job is a challenge of course because of the expectation but it’s something I love. The supporters have been incredible for me since I arrived. I’m the Celtic manager. I love it here and I still have lots of challenges that excite me here.”
This season could be termed as the most challenging one for the manager as he lost some crucial players in the summer window and along with that, their opponents have strengthened further. However, the Bhoys still look capable of going on a good run in the league and they can certainly overturn the three points deficit they have currently with Hearts of Midlothian.
More than the titles and victory, it is the brand of football which has made Rodgers a famous persona at Park Head. His teams usually start in blistering fashion playing with high intensity and with a quick movement of the ball. Often they take the game away in the first 20 minutes and one can see the manager’s blueprint on this team.
The 45-year-old might have a contract up until 2021 but it seems unlikely that he would stay that long at Park Head. From his career’s point of view, the manager would like to have another crack at English football after he was shown the door from Liverpool last.
However, moving to a drowning ship like Newcastle at this point doesn’t make sense and the move would do more harm than good to his career. The Magpies’ owner Mike Ashley is notoriously known for not fulfilling his manager’s transfer demands and Rodgers shouldn’t be interested in a team where he won’t be given a free hand to build his side.
