According to the reports in the Mirror, Liverpool are interested in making a move for Real Madrid’s young sensation Marco Asensio. It is believed that Julen Lopetegui is willing to let the youngster leave in January if the asking price of £100m is met. The Spaniard was expected to take up the mantle at the club after Cristiano Ronaldo left, but the winger cum attacking midfielder has failed to produce the goods so far.
The 22-year-old has managed just one goal in 11 outings so far, and Real Madrid’s attack looks lacklustre this season as they set a new record for the longest goal drought in their 116 years of history: 481 minutes. As expected, a lot of flak is being received by the new manager, but the players also need to take some responsibility.
The Reds, on the other hand, are still unbeaten in the league and are second only on goal difference at the moment. Liverpool haven’t played their usual eye-catching brand of football this season, but they are getting the job done by seeing out narrow leads.
One of the reasons why they have suffered on the attacking front is the ordinary form of their front three so far who were prolific last season. Mohamed Salah’s form has been mainly a cause for concern, but Klopp would hope that it would change as the season wears on.
Liverpool are still yet to replace someone like Philippe Coutinho, and when the front three stops firing, their midfielders aren’t creative enough to carve open defences. Someone like Asensio would solve that problem, but it remains to be seen how keen would the Reds be in signing this Spanish ace.
At just 22, he has set the La Liga ablaze with his performances. However, he needs to deliver the good more consistently. Asensio’s vision, shot taking skills and dribbling abilities sets him apart and playing under someone like Jurgen Klopp could turn him into a world beater.
The fact that he can play in the attacking midfield role would suit Liverpool perfectly as that is the position where they want to add firepower. They were close to signing an attacking midfielder in the form of Nabil Fekir of Lyon, but the move collapsed due to a failed medical in the summer window.
Even though the Reds spent a good amount of money in the summer one can expect them to splash the cash once again to finish their final piece of the jigsaw by signing an attacking midfielder. However, it’s not going to be that straightforward as Chelsea, and Manchester United are also reportedly interested in this 22-year-old winger, and the asking price of £100m could be too steep for the Reds. However, Liverpool have shown in the last transfer window that big price tags don’t too deter them if the player is right.
