According to the latest reports, Celtic are said to be monitoring the situation of Manchester United midfielder cum defender Scott McTominay. It is believed that the Manchester giants are willing to send the Scottish youngster on loan to get some game time. English club Leeds United are also said to be interested in getting him on loan.
Rodgers missed out on the signing of Scott McGinn in the summer as the player went on to join Aston Villa. The manager brought in Youssouf Mulumbu who is more of a defensive midfielder in his place. Therefore the Hoops might be keen on this talented ball playing midfielder from Manchester United who came up from the academy and is highly rated at Old Trafford.
McTominay made just 13 appearances last season, and this season he has managed only four. For his overall development, the youngster needs to play week in week out which doesn’t seem to be possible at United anymore. The Red Devils have a good amount of talent in midfield, and McTominay’s chances are going to be limited. The midfielder recently started the game against Newcastle United and was substituted at halftime. Later Mourinho went on to criticise the youngster as he claimed that the Scottish international looked scared.
The 21-year-old can double as a midfielder and defender so that could come in handy for Rodgers. He looks calm and comfortable on the ball and can distribute the ball well. The midfielder stands at 6ft 4inches, and won’t be too easy to bully off the ball. He is also strong aerially.
McTominay is in a crucial phase of his career now as it’s been more than a year since he made his debut in Manchester United colours. Slowly the 21-year-old needs to pick his game up and reach the top level otherwise he would be shipped away from Manchester soon. A loan move to Celtic is going to give him an opportunity to get some much needed minutes under his belt and if he does well, then maybe he can establish himself at Old Trafford by next season.
United have faced immense heat and scrutiny off late, and one can understand the youngster crumbling under this unwanted pressure. However, it would be tough for McTominay to make regular appearances even in Celtic colours as long as Scott Brown and Olivier Ntcham are fit and available.
However, there is a chance that Ntcham could be sold in January as the Frenchman drew some interest even in the summer. His performance has also gone down this season, so maybe McTominay can be used as a short-term option to fill that gap if Ntcham leaves or fails to improve.
