Latest reports claim that Rangers are set to go after Southampton’s midfielder Steven Davis. This season has already seen former Gers player like Allan McGregor and Kyle Lafferty joining the club for a second stint, and there is a good chance that Davis would be added to the list in January. The 33-year-old has been out of favour at St. Mary’s under Mark Hughes and has been given the permission to talk with other clubs in January. Reports earlier claimed that the Gers tried to sign him in the summer as well, but the move didn’t materialise.
Davis has managed just three appearances in the Premier League so far and is playing more like a squad player. It seems clear that he wouldn’t be offered a new contract at the club, and thus selling him in January would make sense.
The Northern Irish international left Rangers in 2012 and recently a fan asked about returning to the Ibrox to which he replied,”Hopefully one day, hopefully.” Davis was in Glasgow for four seasons where he managed three league titles, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups, as well as reaching the 2008 Uefa Cup Final.
The Gers might have plenty of options in midfield, but someone like Davis can add leadership and grit to the team. Plus he knows a thing or two about winning titles and playing in crunch situations so an experienced head like him would always be a handy man to have on the pitch and even in the locker room.
The midfielder’s love for the club can be known from the fact that around a year ago Davis said,”Obviously with the situation at Rangers (Ongoing liquidation), if it hadn’t happened I probably would never have left the club. But as much as it was a difficult choice at the time, it was maybe a challenge that I needed.”
The Gers made plenty of signings in the summer, and one thing which was evident was that Gerrard was trying to bring players who were accountable and would act as a leader on the pitch. Connor Goldson, Allan McGregor and even someone like Joe Worrall have shown that kind of quality. In midfield, they lack a bit of an experienced head. The likes of Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly are just on loan and even though Gerrard has expressed his desire to sign them, it would be interesting to see whether the club would be able to get their hands on them permanently.
Yes, the move might be slightly driven by emotional force rather than a rational one, given the amount of central midfielder the club has at this time. But a player who is still able to turn up for a top division Premier league club would be a decent addition to the Bears squad. He might not play week in week out, but a player like him can galvanise the whole squad.
