According to the latest reports, Steven Gerrard had inquired about Liverpool’s 18-year-old left back Adam Lewis in the summer for a loan move. However, the move didn’t materialise, and Gerrard instead brought in the likes of Borna Barisic and Jon Flanagan who have done well in the left back spot.
Lewis might soon be promoted to the senior team as recent reports suggest that Alberto Moreno could leave Liverpool with Barcelona one of the interested parties in the defender. Even if the Spaniard doesn’t move in January, it’s clear that he would leave for free in the summer as Liverpool don’t look keen on extending his contract.
Gerrard had worked with the Liverpool u-18 team for quite some time before taking up the top job at Rangers. It seems Lewis impressed the former club captain and that is the reason why he wanted to bring him to Ibrox. The youngster would have been a more natural left back choice over Flanagan, as he is left footed and has been thriving at the youth level in that position.
With Moreno set to leave, Rangers are extremely unlikely to get their man now as, after Moreno, it’s Lewis who is next in line to replace him. However, if the Spaniard stays up until summer, there might be an opportunity to sign the Englishman but having brought in the likes of Barisic and Flanagan, it wouldn’t make much sense for the club to go back for Lewis again.
Flanagan is naturally a right back, but it seems unlikely that he would ever get a game as a right back as long as club captain James Tavernier is fit. Nevertheless, the former Liverpool player has done well in the left back spot in the opportunities which he has got. However, someone like Lewis would have been a more attacking threat given his impressive crossing abilities.
The Liverpool full-back has even played in central midfield, and it’s clear that the young lad is composed and comfortable on the ball. The Gers have a natural fullback in the form of Barisic who was even called up for the Croatian national team recently. We believe Gerrard played it well in the transfer market as Lewis would have only been a loan option and there was no way Liverpool would have let him go on a permanent basis in the future.
Lewis might have been a great addition for one season given his quality but we think the Gers haven’t done too badly even though they failed to land this young fullback. Lewis though can even play as a left midfielder and maybe for that position, one can consider bringing him on loan in January. However, one doesn’t see Gerrard going in again for the u-20 England international.
