Liverpool’s left-back Andy Robertson recently lavished massive praise on Rangers and Scotland custodian Allan McGregor. The veteran custodian has enjoyed a revival in the national team and has got some chances off late in the first team over Celtic keeper Craig Gordon.
After the defeat against Israel, Robertson was quoted as saying,”If I was him I would be doubting every position because none of us showed up apart from Greegs(McGregor), who kept the score down. He was outstanding but other than that I don’t think anyone played to their capabilities. So we’re all under pressure and the lads on the bench can see that and know that there are places up for grabs.”
McGregor has quite easily turned out to be one of the standout signings for the Gers even though the club made as many as 15 summer signings. The fact that he came for free makes it even better, and special kudos for the person who decided to go through with this move as not many people would have gone for a former player who is going to be 37 in few month times. McGregor has shown that age is just a number and Gerrard would be glad to know that he has a secure custodian in goal.
McGregor was especially influential in the Europa League qualifiers and maybe without him, Ibrox would have still been waiting for European football. The way he is going, McGregor can be the number one goalkeeper for the next two to three years. Some goalkeepers are good shot stoppers but what makes the Scottish international special is the way he commands his box.
His judgement for claiming high balls and the way he comes out for crosses and corners are what makes him stand out than the average joe. The 36-year-old is often seen barking out orders to his defence when they start falling back and Gerrard would be glad that he has a proper leader in defence and goal to help his side. That has been one of the reasons why The Gers have done well defensively so far, as last season they struggled to contain teams even though they were the highest goal scorers in the league.
The shot-stopper has now even managed to make a comeback in the Scotland national team after Craig Gordon of Celtic put in some disappointing performances. His experience would come in handy in crunch situations for the club as he was with the Gers when they were dominating Scottish football and the goalkeeper would know a thing or two about winning titles.
