There were some reports in August that Leeds United were keen on signing Curacao’s winger cum attacking midfielder Brandley Kuwas. The 26-year-old currently plies his trade for Heracles Almelo in the Eredivisie. United failed to meet the Dutch club’s asking price of €3.7 m, and maybe the Whites should reconsider going for him in January. The pacy winger is in the final year of his contract, and therefore there is a good chance that Heracles would look to sell in the winter transfer period.
Kuwas has been impressive in the Dutch league so far. Last season, he managed three goals and a whopping 16 assists in 33 appearances. He has started where he left off from the previous campaign as right now, the winger has two goals and two assists to his name in 8 appearances. The 26-year-old has often played as a right winger, and that is the position where he usually thrives. But he is well adept at handling himself in more central areas as well.
What makes him stand out is his terrific pace and ability to pick out a pass in the final third. Leeds United have lacked the latter in the last few games as they have squandered chances after getting into good positions. Moving for Kuwas in January can solve some of that problem.
The West Yorkshire outfit do have two right-wingers in the form of Pablo Hernandez and Jack Harrison currently. However, one shouldn’t forget that Harrison is just on a season-long loan deal. Therefore we believe it still makes sense for United to go after the winger as this move would reap benefits for the Whites in the long run.
Kuwas is an inverted winger, and he usually tries to cut inside on his left foot from the right flank to get into more central areas to affect the play. The winger’s dribbling skills are worth mentioning but something, where he can work on, is his physicality and stamina. The good thing is that both of these attributes can be improved upon, unlike some other skills. Therefore we believe he can be a suitable player for the Whites.
Henandez is likely to be a nailed-on starter when fit and available, so this season, Kuwas can be utilised in more central areas or even down the left flank. Some recent reports suggested that Marcelo Bielsa has already finalised on which areas he needs to add reinforcements and a winger is on the shopping list of the gaffer.
Kuwas can very much be that player, and we also believe that he has the game to take on the challenges of the Championship. The-26-year-old might take some time to get used to the pace and physicality of the game in England, but if he manages to adapt well, defenders would sure find him tough to contain.
