According to a recent report by Devon Live, Manchester United are lining up a move to bring PSV Eindhoven speedster Steven Bergwijn to Old Trafford. It is understood that the Red Devils are among a whole host of clubs looking to secure the services of the Dutch starlet as they look to build for a bigger and brighter future at the Theatre of Dreams.
Bergwijn’s Rapid Rise To The Top
The PSV prospect has emerged as one of the most talented young players in Europe following a run of eye-catching displays in the UEFA Champions League this season. Bergwijn began his football career at ASC Waterwijk before playing for the youth team of AFC Ajax. He made a switch to their rivals PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2011 and managed to graduate from their academy after featuring for PSV’s Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21 teams.
Bergwijn successfully broke into the Dutch club’s first-team set-up in 2015 and has since been on the rise. He has made 12 appearances for PSV this season, scoring five goals while grabbing two assists across all competitions. The Dutch talent has also represented his nation at every youth level from Under-17 onwards. However, he is yet to feature for the Netherlands national squad at a senior level.
Will The Dutch Winger Be A Good Fit For Mourinho’s Team?
Bergwijn is incredibly pacey and knows how to dribble with the ball out of tight spaces. His agility helps him run at the opposing defenders and create chances for his teammates or take shots at goal. However, he is still not an accomplished finisher, and his passing has a lot of room for improvement. Moreover, the Dutch youngster also needs to develop a strong frame if he wants to prove himself in the Premier League.
Despite his rapid emergence at the European stage, Bergwijn is still quite young, and at the age of 21, he still has some time to work on his game and make an impact for one of the top clubs in Europe shortly. For now, the PSV winger needs to keep his head down and continue performing at a high level on all fronts this season.
Should Man United Make A Move For Him?
The Red Devils could use someone of Bergwijn’s talents, but he is far from the finished product and might not get regular game time under Jose Mourinho. Furthermore, United have a whole host of young talents such as Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford, so they are well-stocked in the attacking areas. Hence, Mourinho would be better served in tracking Bergwijn’s progress rather than bringing him to Old Trafford at this moment as the Dutch speedster has still not proven himself at the highest level.
