According to the latest reports in the Scottish Sun, former Rangers captain Lee Wallace is wanted by Championship outfit Wigan Athletic. Wallace has had a fall from grace as he has struggled to get even in matchday squads and has been reeling with injuries of late. The left-back has also been left out of the squad for the Europa League, and it’s looking clear with every passing day that the 31-year-old fullback’s time at the Ibrox is up.
The fullback is in the final year of his contract and maybe a bust-up with then manager Graeme Murty last season was a big give away that Wallace doesn’t have a future in Glasgow any more. The Scotsman was fined four weeks of his wages for that. However, he won his appeal when an internal enquiry team was put into place later.
Gerrard had earlier claimed that Wallace would play some part in their season, but he has been unlucky with injuries of late. The gaffer had said,”Lee is a leader and he’s had a tough time with injury, but I wanted to name him on the bench today(Vs FC Ufa), not necessarily to use him but just to start getting him the feel back for the crowd and being around in the dressing room. The idea now is to push him and try and get him match-fit as soon as we can and he’ll be a big positive for us in the squad.”
However, he has made just one appearance this season so far as a substitute and has even failed to make it to the matchday squads on most occasions. The left-back is currently out again with injuries and we believe the club should have no qualms in selling him in January.
Borna Barisic and Jon Flanagan have clearly shown that they can handle themselves in the left-back role. Barisic was even called up for his national side Croatia recently and there is definitely more quality in him than Wallace at the moment.
Wallace was playing with the youth team to keep himself match fit before an injury struck him down again and it seems like his time is indeed up in the Rangers’ colours. January would also be the last opportunity for the board to get some transfer funds from selling him as the former Scottish international is in the final year of his contract and the club are likely not to offer him a new deal.
We don’t expect the Latics to offer much for Wallace in January but whatever fee the club could manage would be a good deal for the Gers as the player has run his course with the Glasgow giants.
