Liverpool have made an excellent start to their campaign but had to suffer their first defeat of this season against Napoli on Wednesday night. The Reds were flying high in the Premier League before travelling to Naples and failing to find the back of the net. One of Jurgen Klopp’s main concerns right now would be the lack of productivity in the final third. But to the surprise of many, their defensive form has been outstanding over the past few weeks.
Liverpool’s Lack Of Depth In Defence
However, both Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk are the only centre-backs at the club who look like they are good enough to start for Liverpool on a weekly basis. The same cannot be said about Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren as evidenced by their lacklustre display in the 2-1 home defeat against Chelsea last week which saw the Reds get knocked out of the Carabao Cup.
Koulibaly: A Potential Solution?
Klopp could use another world-class defender in his squad so that he can rotate and give his players some rest when fixtures come thick and fast in the second half of the campaign. Hence, he should consider recruiting Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly in the near future. The Serie A centre-half has put in some commanding displays for the Naples-based side over the past few years and can be considered as one of the best defenders in European football.
What Will The Senegalese Talent Add To Klopp’s Squad?
Koulibaly can play out from the back and is a dominant figure at both ends of the pitch. The 27-year-old has a huge frame which makes him a commanding presence at the back. He has all the making of a world-class defender and has shown that he can make crucial interceptions under pressure as evidenced by his man of the match performance against Liverpool in midweek.
Will Koulibaly Be A Perfect Signing For Liverpool?
The Senegalese centre-half will be an ideal fit for Klopp’s system at Merseyside as he can slot in alongside Van Dijk at the heart of the Liverpool backline. Moreover, Klopp can also choose to play three at the back with Koulibaly, Gomez and Van Dijk which makes him an even more attractive proposition. The Reds should try and lure him to Anfield as he could thrive under the stewardship of someone like Klopp if given a chance to prove his value in the Premier League.
