Manchester City will travel to Anfield in one of the most anticipated clashes of this season where they will take on Liverpool. City might have won the league last season, but Liverpool went away with the bragging rights between the two by defeating them thrice in the four games they played with each other. No other manager in the world has defeated Pep Guardiola as many times as Jurgen Klopp, and one can expect some eye-catching football on display in the Merseyside.
Both the teams have had a strong start to the season as they have each managed 19 points from a possible 21. City would like to finally get the better of Liverpool at Anfield, a ground where they haven’t won since 2003. History and recent results between the two might be favouring the Reds for this tie, but count City out at your peril.
Team News
Kevin De Bruyne has hardly been missed as the likes of Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and David Silva stepped up big time in the midfield. De Bruyne has started training but bringing him in this game would be too soon. Fabian Delph and Benjamin Mendy are also likely to miss out due to injuries.
Manchester City’s Predicted Lineup Vs Liverpool
Formation (4-3-3)
Defence
Two Brazilian goalkeepers would be up against each other and City are going to take the field with Ederson who was no.2 to Alisson Becker in the World Cup. Maybe in this clash, he would like to prove a point on who should be the no. 1 starter in goal for the country. Guardiola has so far preferred the partnership of Nicolas Otamendi and Aymeric Laporte, and it is expected that those two would start in the centre back roles. Vincent Kompany started the midweek Champions League clash, and the Citizens have been wary of his workload, so he is likely to miss out.
With two left-back options out injured, young Oleksandr Zinchenko could start in that role. Out on the right, English fullback, Kyle Walker should be a guaranteed starter.
Midfield
Fernandinho will play in his usual anchor role. Bernardo Silva has been outstanding so far and he didn’t start the midweek game, so we expect him to be given a start against Liverpool. David Silva should be the other midfielder but one shouldn’t be surprised if Ilkay Gundogan gets selected ahead of him. However, we think City will double up on Silva for this game.
Forward
Raheem Sterling had a splendid game against Brighton last week and he should start ahead of Riyad Mahrez who is still looking to find his feet in the playing eleven. Leroy Sane would like to prove a point to Trent Alexander Arnold in this game as the Englishman got the better of him when they met in the Champions League last.
Up front, none other than City’s record goalscorer Sergio Aguero would lead the line against Liverpool.
