Manchester City have made a near perfect start to their Premier League campaign and have also managed to book a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Pep Guardiola’s squad is brimming with talent but one area of concern for the Spanish manager could be the goalkeeping position as Ederson is currently the only fit senior keeper at the club.
The severe injury to Claudio Bravo has seen Arijanet Muric step up and take his place in goal for the Citizens during the League Cup clash away at Oxford United. City managed to secure a comfortable 3-0 win at the Kassam Stadium this week as Muric was hardly tested on the night. However, the youngster might not be a worthy long-term back-up to Ederson, so Guardiola needs to bring in a new and reliable number 2 keeper in January so that his team has enough strength in depth to compete on all fronts this season.
Here are three potential goalkeepers who Man City could sign in January to play as back-up to Ederson.
Jack Butland
The English goalkeeper is currently plying his trade in the EFL Championship for Stoke City. He has already put in some eye-catching displays for the Potters this season. Hence, City could consider bringing him in to play as their backup goalie especially since Butland would provide a safe pair of hands in goal for the Citizens.
Rune Jarstein
The Hertha Berlin keeper has enjoyed a rich vein of form in the Bundesliga this season. The Norwegian has conceded just seven goals in 6 appearances for the German club and has kept two clean sheets in the process across all competitions. He will suit Guardiola’s style of play at the Etihad Stadium and could be an ideal option to play second fiddle to Ederson.
Andriy Pyatov
The captain of the Ukrainian national team has a wealth of experience at the highest level which makes him a perfect fit for the Citizens. The 34-year-old is currently playing for Shakhtar Donetsk and has already put in some solid displays in goal for the Ukrainian giants. He has shipped in 8 goals in 11 matches for Donetsk this term while keeping five clean sheets in all competitions.
