Manchester United have made a mediocre start to their domestic campaign after winning three, drawing one and losing three of their seven Premier League matches, while also being knocked out of the League Cup by Derby County last week. The Red Devils have lacked quality in some key areas of their squad, which has been evident throughout their inconsistent performances this season.
Jose Mourinho needs to address a few key problem areas of his squad in January if his side are to challenge for a top 4 place this season. United could benefit from bringing in some reinforcements in the winter transfer window, who might come in and give them an edge in the race for the UEFA Champions League positions during the second half of this campaign.
Here are three such players Mourinho should sign to improve his squad in January.
Koke (Atletico Madrid):
The Atletico Madrid midfield enforcer will be a perfect fit for Mourinho’s style of play at Old Trafford. He is a class act at the middle of the pitch and has enjoyed a solid start to this campaign so far, after scoring two goals and grabbing one assist in eight appearances for Diego Simeone’s team across all competitions. At 26, Koke is currently playing the best football of his career so he could be an immediate solution for United’s midfield woes if the Mancunian outfit can lure him to English football in January.
Kalidou Koulibaly (SSC Napoli):
The Senegalese defensive ace was a commanding presence for Maurizio Sarri’s backline at Napoli last season. He had a solid 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign with Senegal and had begun this season with some outstanding displays for the Serie A giants. Koulibaly is currently playing at his peak and could be a good fit for the Red Devils as he can come in and enhance the quality of the United backline significantly, while also posing a threat from set-pieces going forward.
Ciro Immobile (Lazio):
The Italian centre-forward has been a consistent goal-scorer for Lazio over the past few seasons. He has an excellent knack of finding the back of the net on a regular basis and would add a lot of firepower to the lacklustre Man United attack if Mourinho can lure him to Old Trafford in January. Immobile has scored four goals in eight matches for the Serie A outfit this season and is only getting better with age.
