Kilmarnock once again got the better of Celtic, and that would have delighted Rangers fans the most as they leapfrogged over their Old Firm rivals in the table even though had one of the worst starts to the league since 1989. Many of the Gers fans are calling for the club to sign Jordan Jones of Kilmarnock who was previously linked twice with a move to Ibrox but nothing materialised at that time.
Reports from the Scottish Sun suggests that Rangers had their bid turned down for the winger who impressed in the Celtic win last weekend. The player also admitted that his head was turned in the transfer window by the thought of moving to Glasgow. The Northern Irish winger started his career with Middlesbrough and has been with Kilmarnock since 2016. In the two years at the club, he has slowly become one of the most important attacking players for Steve Clarke.
The winger has so far made 95 appearances in the last two years and has scored seven goals and provided 18 assists. Jones is predominantly a left winger, but he can pay in a more central role as well. The 24-year-old was called up by his national side in 2017 and has been building his reputation as a tricky customer down the left flank.
Against Celtic, he gave their right-back Mikael Lustig a tough time as Lustig failed to contain Jones throughout the game and Rangers should eye him again in the transfer window after two failed attempt to land him.
Jones did say that failing to reach an agreement with Rangers over the last two windows was tough for him mentally. He had said, ”Yes, it does affect you. It is mental torture, really. You are getting told a lot of things and trying to concentrate on football but it is draining. Through those two transfer windows were two of the worst times in my life. But you just have to get back to your football as quickly as possible and let that side of the game take care of itself.”
Gerrard has done well in the summer window to recruit as many as 15 players so one can expect the Gers to be a bit silent in the January window. However, we know that Jamie Murphy is out for the season and Ryan Kent is only on loan.
Gerrard has expressed his desire to sign the Liverpool man permanently, but the English club might demand a price which could be tough for the Gers to match. In that case, they can look at someone like Jones who has slowly been catching the eye with his performances.
