Tottenham Hotspur have had a rollercoaster of a season so far after winning their first three matches in the league which includes a fantastic 3-0 away victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford. However, it was followed by three successive defeats at the hands of Watford, Liverpool and Inter Milan respectively which has sent the alarm bells ringing at North London. Mauricio Pochettino now has a big task on his hand in turning his team’s fortunes around in the coming weeks as Spurs look to get some wins under their belt.
The North London giants have two away trips to Brighton & Hove Albion and Huddersfield Town coming up in the Premier League with a League Cup clash at home versus Watford sandwiched in between the two League matches. So Pochettino’s men would have an excellent opportunity to build some momentum before they host Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League at the start of next month.
Here are some of the things Pochettino needs to do so that his players can turn things around for the better in the coming matches.
Stick With The Same Backline
The Tottenham boss has been guilty of tweaking his backline quite often which is why they have conceded six goals in their past three matches across all competitions. Pochettino needs to stick with the same defence if he wants to be successful in the long-run. However, with Hugo Lloris out for the time being, the Argentine manager’s job has been made even harder considering how influential of a leader the French World Cup winner can be at the back for Spurs.
A back four of Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies should line up for Tottenham over the next few matches if Spurs are to turn their fortunes around.
Give Rest To Some Of His Underperforming Stars
Pochettino also had a headache of having so many players return late for pre-season due to their commitments for their respective national sides in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The likes of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen may need some time off to recharge their batteries and come back stronger than ever. The Tottenham boss needs to find a way to cope with the absence of his stars in the short-term, but it can lead to great things for the club in the long-run.
Start Lucas Moura In Every Match
Moura has been Spurs’ best player this season after his match-winning displays against Fulham and Manchester United in the Premier League. The Brazilian could be the answer to Tottenham’s problems going forward as evidenced by his cameo last night.
He came off the bench to make a significant impact for the North London team in the opposition half which begs the question of why Pochettino didn’t start him at the San Siro. More of Lucas Moura could mean more success for Spurs as long as they can keep it tight at the back.
