Around a week ago, at Celtic Park, a charity match was held to generate funds for cancer and the game was played between Petrov’s XI vs Milner’s XI. Representing Petrov’s XI, Manchester United’s winger turned fullback, Ashley Young played in the Celtic colours and was impressive on the day. So much so that fans are calling out in large numbers to sign the England international. So we try to find out the likelihood of this happening and where he would fit in the squad if Rodgers does make a move.
The Englishman is in the final year of his contract at Manchester United. He is yet to start a game this season given the resurgence of Luke Shaw in the left back role. Young started his Manchester United career as an outright winger, but slowly, he has become a utility player in the squad, filling and playing in everywhere the manager requires him.
Last season, because of Shaw’s injury struggles, the 33-year-old played in the left-back role for the most of the season. He was so impressive that Gareth Southgate picked him for the World Cup in a slightly similar position.
However, we believe that at Celtic, Young wouldn’t be wasted down in the defence. With Kieran Tierney also at the club, there is no way Young would play in the backline. However, one cannot rule it out if Tierney is sold in the future transfer window. Even then, the Englishman would likely play in the attacking third.
Young might not be the most talented players United have had in the past few years, but he has sure made a career at one of the top clubs in the world for almost eight years now. His application and commitment for his side are one of the reasons why managers love to have him in the squad. The former Watford player never complained of being played out of position, and he was always ready to adapt to the team needs and requirements.
The Hoops are well covered in the attacking department as they have the likes of James Forrest, Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor and Scott Sinclair as genuine first-team options. But even then, Young would make a big case for himself to start. The wealth of experience he has could make him stand out, and the Englishman can be a mentor to certain young players as well.
It is highly unlikely that Rodgers would be able to land him in January as Mourinho wouldn’t like to sell him mid-season. But when his contract expires in the summer, maybe the Hoops can chance their arm to lure him to Park Head.
