Former England international Darren Bent recently gave an interview where he indicated that he would love to play under his former captain Steven Gerrard at Rangers. The former Tottenham Hotspur striker is currently with League one outfit Burton and Albion where he is not on a professional contract, but he has a deal which is known as pay as you play and technically he is still a free agent. and therefore the Gers can still sign him if they want.
Bent was asked in an interview whether he would like a switch to Ibrox to which he replied,”100 per cent. You’re talking about one of the biggest clubs in football in Rangers. To get the opportunity to go up there and play – definitely!”
The Gers have already 15 signings in the summer and Gerrard is surely going to have a tough time in getting his team to gel in a short space of time. Bent is already way past his prime and he might still be looking for a big stage to showcase his worth one final time. But it is highly unlikely that Gerrard would go after him unless there is a major injury crisis in the attacking department.
Though there is what you can say a mini-crisis at the moment as Kyle Lafferty was recently injured in the international clash and it is yet not clear whether he is going to be fit in time. However, the news could be a positive one as he was fit enough to make the bench against Israel when his country Northern Ireland took on the Asian side.
That would be a sigh of relief for Gerrard as the injury doesn’t seem to be too serious. The Teddy Bears are going to take on Villareal soon in the Europa League and Alfredo Morelos is set to miss that game due to a suspension.
Bent does have the experience of playing 277 games in the Premier League, and at his best, he was good in the air and was also a strong runner on the ball. However, he failed to make the cut at Burton last season when he was there on loan from Derby County, and it’s fair to say that the striker is likely to struggle at Ibrox if Gerrard makes a move for him.
The signing of Bent would also not bode well for someone like Umar Sadiq who has been waiting in the wings to get an opportunity. The young striker moved on loan to Glasgow from AS Roma, and his record at youth level has been outstanding. Signing Bent would indicate that Gerrard doesn’t trust Sadiq enough to lead the line and we believe giving a 21-year-old youngster more opportunity would be a better idea than a 34-year old striker who is in the final lap of his career.
