A report by The Mirror has recently claimed that Liverpool are ready to look elsewhere in January and are not willing to pursue the services of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The Reds were heavily linked with a move for the French talent in recent weeks, but such reports were way off the mark, according to the Liverpool Echo. It is understood that the Frenchman is currently in the final year of his contract with the Parisian club and is set to become a free agent next summer.
Jurgen Klopp’s side has a plethora of midfield options and should look to strengthen in other positions if they want to improve the quality of their squad. The Reds managed to bring in the likes of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig and Fabinho from AS Monaco over the summer. Klopp already had some quality talents such as James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in his squad so going for another midfielder makes no sense at this moment in time.
Long-term Replacement For James Milner?
Klopp has some ageing midfielders in his squad. At 32, James Milner is about to embark upon the twilight years of his career which is why Liverpool needs to bring in a long-term replacement. Rabiot will not only be a worthy alternative but would also bring in his own set of attributes which Milner does not possess.
Does Rabiot Suit Liverpool’s Style Of Play?
The 23-year-old PSG star is a ‘jack of all trades’ in midfield and has no major flaws to his game as such. The Frenchman is blessed with an excellent passing range and can also dribble with the ball, which would suit Klopp’s ‘gegen-press’ style of football at Anfield.
Similar to many of the Liverpool midfielders, Rabiot is a workhorse and primarily operates as a box to box midfielder. However, the French international lacks pace which he more than makes up for through his physical dominance at the centre of the pitch.
Not Attempting To Sign The Frenchman Will Be A Huge Mistake By Klopp
Rabiot is a quality talent, and players like him are not often available, so the possibility of signing him on a free transfer is an opportunity which most clubs would feel as one which is too good to turn down. Hence, Klopp would be foolish not to explore the chance of signing him for free next summer if the player expresses a desire to join the Merseyside club.
