Tottenham Hotspur had made a solid start to their Premier League campaign after winning their first three matches of the season before suffering a bitter 2-1 defeat at the hands of Watford last weekend. One of the main reasons for their most recent shortcoming was due to most of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team players’ involvement in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Spurs looked tired and disjointed during their match at Vicarage Road on Sunday which is why they are in need of a few reinforcements in the coming weeks.
Heung-Min Son managed to avoid serving the military for his country after South Korea managed to beat Japan in the 2018 Asian Games final in Jakarta. He is now set to rejoin the North London club but is he in line for a start in Pochettino’s first-team?
Son’s Biggest Stumbling Block
Lucas Moura, who has started all of Spurs’ league matches so far, has been in a rich vein of form under Pochettino this season. This is why Son could be made to wait for his chance in Spurs’ senior team. The likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are undroppable, so it might be a tough ask for the South-Korean international to sneak a place back in the Tottenham first XI.
Has The South-Korean Done Enough To Merit A Start For Spurs?
Son had a problematic 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign with South Korea after a terrific season with Spurs in the previous campaign. He still managed to put in a match-winning display in their group-stage match against Germany which knocked the European giants out of the competition.
The 26-year-old reported back to North London just in time to be available for selection at the start of this season. However, he was named as a substitute in Tottenham’s league match away at Newcastle United.
Son then went off to represent his nation in the Asian Games where he won gold which would be enough to keep him away from military service. He has had a rollercoaster of a few months and deserves his chance in Pochettino’s first-team despite being tired from all the hectic action during the summer.
What Should Pochettino Do?
Pochettino could look to use Christian Eriksen in a deeper role in midfield so that he can unleash Son as part of a terrific Tottenham attack. That will be the most likely solution, otherwise, it would be a straight fight between Son and Lucas Moura for a place in Spurs’ starting XI.
