According to a recent report by the Daily Record, Celtic forward Moussa Dembele has told the club that he wants to leave before the summer transfer window slams shut. The 22-year-old centre-forward has been linked with a move to Lyon, but the Hoops have so far resisted all efforts.
Dembele has been Rodgers’ star striker at Celtic Park over the past few years which is why we can understand why the Glaswegian giants are so reluctant in letting him depart the club this summer. However, with the French striker already hoping to part ways with the Bhoys, it might be the best option for Rodgers to give Dembele his wish by letting him leave before the transfer deadline.
Here are a few reasons why the Hoops should sanction a move for Dembele’s exit.
Dembele’s Rapid Rise At Parkhead Should Be Rewarded
Since his move from Fulham, the French forward has been an excellent asset for Celtic and has scored 51 goals and grabbed 18 assists in 94 matches for the Scottish Premiership heavyweights. Hence, his outstanding contributions should be rewarded, and the Hoops should not stand in his way if he wishes to make a switch back to his homeland.
No Value In Keeping An Unhappy Player
Keeping an unhappy player like Dembele could turn the Hoops’ season into a disaster. The fact that Rodgers’ team are not in the UEFA Champions League would be a big turnoff for someone like Dembele, and hence, they should let him leave so that he does not drag the whole team’s morale down. Moreover, there is no guarantee that Dembele would provide the same return in goals even if Celtic manages to keep him at Parkhead for the time being.
Rodgers Already Has Some Worthy Replacements
The Celtic manager already has some ideal replacements for the Frenchman in his squad which would soften the blow of losing someone of the calibre of Dembele. The likes of Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard have already proven their value for the Bhoys in the recent past.
Hence, parting ways with Dembele should be the way to go if the player is unhappy and wants to leave the club this summer.
