Newcastle United succumbed to a loss at the hands of Chelsea at St James Park in their third match of this Premier League season. The Magpies’ defensive effort was not good enough to contain the Blues, who clinched their third win of the season on a trot.
Rafa Benitez threw in some surprises in the starting eleven, with both Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey missing despite starting their last match against Cardiff City, which they had won. On loan winger Kenedy was also missing from their side as he was ineligible to play against his parent club. This made the former Chelsea manager bring in a slew of changes in the form of Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar, Ki Sung-yueng and Salomon Rondon with the striker making his debut in the starting eleven for Newcastle.
Eden Hazard went onto open the scoring with a well-taken penalty in the 76th minute of the match. Joselu scored the equaliser in the 83rd minute, but DeAndre Yedlin netted an unfortunate own goal to extend the lead for the Blues in the 87th minute, which turned out to be the match winner.
This is how the Newcastle United players were rated from their disappointing loss against Chelsea.
Martin Dubravka 6
Made a few good saves but had to end up on the losing side.
DeAndre Yedlin 5
Looked good while going forward but was at fault for scoring the own goal.
Fabian Schar 6
Did a decent job in the heart of the defence and kept the Chelsea strikers quiet to some extent.
Federico Fernandez 7
A hearty display on his debut for the Magpies. A commendable performance as a stand-in for Lascelles.
Ciaran Clark 7
Looked equally good and dished out a composed performance to complement Fernandez.
Paul Dummett 6
Did well to keep the dangerous Pedro quiet.
Matt Ritchie 5
Looked far from effective and not his usual self.
Ki Sung-yueng 6
A solid performance by the South Korean ace.
Mo Diame 6
Looked good while on the ball and tried to get on the back of the Chelsea defenders quite a few times.
Jacob Murphy 6
Tried his best to unlock the Chelsea defence.
Salomon Rondon 6
His physical presence caused problems for the Chelsea backline but could not find any opening to get the ball in the net.

Came on in the 62nd minute and handed his team a lifeline by scoring the equaliser at the time.
Ayoze Perez 5
Lacked the penetration to get past the Chelsea defence.
Yoshinori Muto N/A
Played too little to warrant a rating.
