According to the Metro, Arsenal‘s defensive ace Shkodran Mustafi is of the opinion that German goalkeeper Bernd Leno has the capability to become the number 1 custodian for the Gunners in the near future. The 26-year-old shot stopper was brought into the side this summer and was expected to start as the first choice goalkeeper under the new manager Unai Emery.
The Spanish manager, however, has gone in with the veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech for the first two matches, leaving the German custodian on the bench. This has surprised a number of fans who were expecting to see Leno start for the Gunners from the very start of the new season.
Despite the early setback Leno has faced, his compatriot Mustafi has come out in defence of the goalkeeper and has expressed his confidence in him. The 26-year-old defender has also stated that it would not take the custodian long to become the successor of Cech in the Arsenal goal.
Mustafi said, “I know Bernd very well because we played together since the Under-15s German team, so I have known him for a long time.”. He added,”He is a brilliant goalkeeper. He has everything a modern keeper needs: good feet, good hands and he has personality.”
The defender also admitted that there is healthy competition for places in the squad, which will eventually benefit the team. He said, “Competition is right but it has to be healthy. For us it is because we are in a good team spirit. Everyone is quite happy with the people we have in the changing room.”

He also said, ‘There’s no people fighting each other or something like this. There is competition but healthy competition and that is something that is going to bring us forward.’
