Tottenham Hotspur did not sign anyone in the transfer market, but they managed to hold on to Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele who were all linked with a move away from the club. This can potentially be bad news for young prospects in the Spurs squad. Juan Foyth happens to be one of them who is a centre-half and with the experienced Belgian defender Alderweireld set to stay, Foyth would now find it hard to get game time at the North London club. This is where Leeds United can take advantage of the situation by going after the young centre-back by signing him on loan.
The Relationship Between Bielsa And Pochettino Could Come Handy Here
Bielsa could potentially make use of his relationship with Mauricio Pochettino as the former Argentine international had played under Bielsa when he was the manager of Argentina. Pochettino considers Bielsa as a significant influence in his tactics and philosophy, and the Spurs manager would be aware that his player would be in good hands if he sends his young defender to Elland Road.
Leeds United Needs One More Centre-Half
The Whites currently have three out and out centre-backs in Liam Cooper, Pontus Jansson and Conor Shaughnessy. Gaetano Berardi has so far filled in the centre back role even though he is traditionally a right back, so we feel that United are one centre back short at the moment.
The 20-year-old is yet to represent Spurs in the Premer League, but he has made appearances for them in Cup competitions. He has joined the English club only last year, but many fans already see the Argentine as a future starter. If we are to be brutally honest, his playing time hinges on Alderweireld’s stay at the club. With English clubs out of the race for this transfer window, an offer from European clubs for £50-75m might lure Spurs into selling the Belgian defender. If they manage to keep him, Bielsa could have a great opportunity at bringing Foyth at Elland Road.
Foyth Would Fit In Seamlessly
The Whites are playing an expansive and hard-working brand of football and that is going to take a toll on them as the season progresses. Having depth in the squad should be of top priority if United want to make their good start count in the long run.
The young Argentine defender would be a perfect fit for the system which United are playing currently. Foyth is good on the ball and is an excellent reader of the game. There is a reason why Pochettino has bought him for a reported fee of £8m. Spurs also deploy the same strategy as they press high up on the pitch and look to build from the back, so the player would already be aware of pressing tactics and how to play out of the back.
With the interesting relationship that the two managers share, the Whites have an added advantage, but Spurs could be sceptical about letting him leave for the whole season as they would be looking to challenge on all the fronts and after December when the FA Cup starts, games come thick and fast for the Premier League clubs. That could be one of the reasons why Spurs would want to hold on to Foyth. Nevertheless, United should definitely give it a go in trying to bring the young defender to West Yorkshire.
