Following their heroics against Leicester City in the opening day of the new Premier League season, Manchester United fell to their first defeat when they lost 3-2 away at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday evening. Jose Mourinho’s backline was in sixes and sevens during the first half and couldn’t manage to mount a comeback after the break. Some atrocious mistakes and a few under par performances from some of their star players summed up another frustrating outing for the Red Devils.
Status Quo is unacceptable!
Mourinho has already been guilty of criticising his players publicly, and now it seems like he is slowly losing the plot at Old Trafford. Most of his first-teamers are not performing at their best which is a significant cause for concern for the United faithful. Maybe, it’s time for a much-needed change at the Mancunian club as things can’t continue the way its been going for them of late.
The Reds of Manchester had a trophyless campaign last term as they struggled to compete with their local rivals, Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. However, Mourinho’s failure to land any major transfer targets this summer has left the club’s hopes of mounting a serious title challenge in tatters.
Deflection, Deflection And Some More Deflection
The Special One refused to criticise his players after the Brighton defeat, citing the media as a key reason behind his reaction. In the post-match interview, the Portuguese boss was quoted to have said, “When I am critical with my players you just don’t accept it, so please do not ask me to go in this direction because it is not good for me,”
“I will be very happy to analyse my players’ performances when they were very good. When I cannot do that, don’t push me to the other side because I will not go to the other side.”
It is evident from Mourinho’s words that he is trying to deflect the attention from his side’s poor showing at the Amex Stadium. It’s high time that the former Real Madrid manager owned up to his mistakes and rectified some of them in the coming weeks. Otherwise, the 55-year-old could be a man living on borrowed time at Old Trafford.
Mourinho Living In Borrowed Time?
Maybe, his exit could be the best move for both parties as things clearly do not seem right at the Mancunian club right now. The United boss is in dire need of turning his team’s fortunes for the better rather than sulk on their recent shortcomings.
Mourinho has a proven track record of getting himself out of tricky situations. The fact that he has a healthy Points Per Game average of 2.05 (According to Transfermrkt) after taking charge of 122 matches for the Red Devils only works in his favour. However, unless he decides to keep his ego aside and can successfully get the best out of the current crop of players, it would probably be for the best that the Portuguese tactician would part ways with the Manchester outfit sooner rather than later.
