According to the Metro, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has revealed the cause behind his team squandering a two-goal lead in their last match against Arsenal. The Blues started strongly and scored two goals within the first 20 minutes but threw away the lead as the Gunners came back on level terms via strikes from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi in the first half itself.
Pedro opened the scoring while Alvaro Morata scored the second to put Chelsea in a strong position. However, Arsenal took full advantage of the defensive lapses by the opposition as they clawed back their way into the match. The Blues demonstrated a lot better defensive effort in the second half and secured all the three points with a brilliant finish from Marcos Alonso in the 81st minute.
The win takes Chelsea to the top of the table in the Premier League 2018/19 season but the performance was not satisfactory for Sarri. The Italian gaffer said in the post-match press conference, ‘It was a wonderful game.’
He added, ‘The three points were very hard for us but I think that we did well because after the end of the first half it was not so easy to start again. ‘I think we lost the distance between players because in the 15 mins [before half-time] we were unable to cover the lost ball and to arrive to press at the right time. ‘I think we lost completely the distances. We have to work because in 15 mins we conceded four or five opportunities so we have to work.’
