As per the Daily Star, Manchester United yesteryear star and football pundit Rio Ferdinand said that he was confident that the Red Devils will be able to land the Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld. However, Jose Mourinho’s men were not able to get the player this summer.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was more than willing to get a new defender in their lineup this summer and had a number of names on his wishlist. Alderwireld and Harry Maguire from Leicester City topped that list but the Portuguese gaffer could not get his hands on both of them. On the deadline day, the Red Devils even went for the veteran Atletico Madrid defensive ace Diego Godin but the Spanish club rejected the offer to let go of their centre back.
The Manchester club have started their Premier League campaign in style this season and have notched up a win against Leicester in their very first match. French midfield maverick Paul Pogba and English defender Luke Shaw scored the goals for their team to earn them three important points and get the campaign on road.
Ferdinand, who was himself a defensive stalwart for Manchester United, stated that he was sure that his former club will be desperate to land the Tottenham Hotspur star. The former England star told BT Sport, “I was in favour of bringing Toby Alderweireld from Spurs,” he added, “When playing regularly, I think he’s within the top two or three centre-halfs in the country, in this league.
