According to the Metro, Arsenal manager Unai Emery has picked his first choice goalkeeper for the season and to the surprise of a lot of people, it is not the new signing Bernd Leno. The German custodian was expected to take on the defensive duties from the veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech but it looks like he is going to bide his time on the bench.
The Gunners will be taking on the defending champions Manchester City first up in the Premier League this season and Emery is looking to use Cech as his last line of defence in this mega clash. The 36-year-old goalkeeper is undoubtedly one of the most experienced players in the competition but had fallen down the pecking order after his average showing in the last term.
When Leno was brought into the team this summer, it was expected that he will be one to be trusted with the gloves by the Spanish manager. However, it seems that Emery has full faith in the old war-horse Petr Cech as he will be the one to face the likes of Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane in the opening fixture at the Emirates stadium.
Not only, the Czech Republic shot-stopper is also going to wear the captain’s armband in Arsenal’s first outing of the season. In his defence of selecting Cech above Leno, the gaffer said in the pre-match press conference,
‘In my career, I want leaders in the team.
