As per latest reports in the Mirror, Brendan Rodgers is looking to sign Pedro Chirivella from Liverpool on a permanent basis. The 21-year-old Spaniard started his career with Valencia before moving to the English club in 2013. However, he has failed to break into the first team and given the options Reds have in midfield; it looks certain that he will have to ply his trade in the reserve squad if he stays at Anfield.
It is believed that Celtic are willing to pay £3.5m to acquire the midfielder. A similar bid was put in by Norwegian outfit Rosenborg which was declined by the Reds. However, Brendan Rodgers will hope that being the former manager of the club might influence the Liverpool board to send the player to Celtic Park.
Chirivella is a defensive midfielder, and he has made five senior team appearances for the Reds. Last season he was on loan to Eredivisie outfit Willem II where he was a regular for them as he made 35 appearances in all competitions.
Celtic will be looking to continue their domination in Scottish football, and the signing of the 21-year-old will bring a lot of competition for places and will add depth to the squad. Rodgers must have witnessed Chirivella from close quarters during his time at Anfield so he will be aware of what the player’s strength and weaknesses are.

Even at Parkhead, the Spaniard will find it tough to break into the team initially given the options they already have at their disposal. The player’s strength lies in his passing and dribbling skills, and he is naturally more suited to play in a slightly free role in midfield. Liverpool should not have any qualms in selling him and for the player, moving away from the Merseyside club will help him better in his overall development.
