If latest reports are to be believed then Manchester United have handed in a final ‘take it or leave it’ bid for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld. The 29-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club even before the transfer window began and United have been the hot favourites to sign him. It’s believed that the Red Devils have put in a £40m bid for the defender. Daniel Levy had earlier slapped a price tag of £75m for the defender but it is unlikely that United will match that amount.
We are now in the final stages of the transfer period and the Belgian is still Tottenham Hotspur player. Strong reports had suggested that United will sign the defender before the transfer window ends but with every passing day and now hours, things will get nervy for the board and the manager.
Alderweireld can be available for as less as £25m next season if Spurs decide to trigger his extra year on the contract. That, in turn, will trigger a release clause which is set at the £25m mark. However, Jose Mourinho doesn’t have that much time in his hands and he will be desperate to land a defender in the ongoing transfer period.
The defender will definitely be an upgrade over most of the defenders which United have currently. A partnership between the Belgian and Eric Bailly can be a formidable one as United look to stop Manchester City‘s domination next season.

Alderweireld has got everything to his game which a modern-day defender needs. He is strong in his challenges and is comfortable with the ball on his feet. United have left it quite late to land the defender and this deal might go down the wire as the £40m bid is quite less than Daniel Levy’s valuation of the player.
