Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic has rejected the chance to leave the Merseyside club and join Cardiff City this summer. According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds midfield talent has declined an opportunity to join the Bluebirds during this summer transfer period.
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has revealed that a potential deal has fallen through for the Serbian international mainly due to the player’s “contract issue” with the Reds. The 22-year-old had a loan spell at the Cardiff City Stadium last season when he helped them secure a promotion back to the English top-flight.
Grujic had featured in 14 matches under Warnock in the last campaign and played an instrumental part in the Welsh club’s promotion push. It was no surprise that Cardiff wanted to re-sign him this summer.
However, a potential deal looks unlikely at this point in time. Jurgen Klopp already has the likes of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum and new recruits, Fabinho and Naby Keita to rely upon. Hence, Grujic is likely to be a subject of limited first-team opportunities once again next season if he decides to stay at Anfield beyond this summer.
In a recent interview, Warnock weighed in on the situation and was quoted to have said, “Grujic looks like he will stay put… I think he would be better off here but it is a contract issue, I understand his point of view,”
“Liverpool have four competitions before Christmas and he can play in those without being named in the 25-man squad.
“I have missed out on a couple of targets waiting for him. It is disappointing as everything was agreed with Liverpool. But sometimes fate intervenes.”
