According to reports in Germany, Arsenal are set to rival Manchester United for the signature of Jerome Boateng. The £45m rated defender has been given the green signal to leave Munich outfit and United appeared to be the likely destination for the 29-year-old defender.
Though with Arsenal entering the race, things could get complicated, however, it will be very unlike “Arsenal” if they decide to spend £45m on a defender who will be turning next month. On the other hand, United are desperately looking for a proven centre-back and they have been linked with quite a few of them. With the transfer window drawing to a close, Jose Mourinho will hope to seal the deal for at least one of his targets and it remains to be seen whether that target will be Jerome Boateng.
The Gunners struggled defensively last campaign so one can understand why they are looking to sign a centre back. Laurent Koscielny is set to miss the start of the season and that could be a cause for concern for Unai Emery.
United are strongly linked with Toby Alderweireld and it is unlikely that they will go after two centre-halves. If they manage to land him, Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain might will have a better chance of landing him but in a battle between the two, the French outfit will be the likely winner.

Signing a defender on a decline for such big money can backfire and Arsenal will be tempted to hold on to their cash instead of spending on Boateng. Latest reports suggest that United are already in talks for the defender so Arsenal might lose out on him which can turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the Gunners.
