Manchester United were offered a chance to sign Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng and latest reports suggest that they have opened up talks to sign him. However, they are keen on reducing the asking price for the defender from £45m. It remains to be seen whether Bayern will be willing to accept less for their German defensive ace.
Boateng’s stock has taken a beating after a poor display in the World Cup for his country. Last season, for Bayern Munch, he missed a good chunk of the season due to injuries and one can say that the player is on his decline. No wonder United want to drive his price down as next month he will be turning 30.
The 29-year-old has the experience of playing in the Premier League before and the player will join the list of players who have played on both sides of Manchester.
Signing a centre back is of utmost priority for the Red Devils and they have been linked with plenty of them in the ongoing transfer window. Many sources are reporting that United will land Toby Alderweireld before the transfer window ends, however, things will get nervy if the deal isn’t finalised as there are just a few days remaining in the window.

Jose Mourinho will be aware that he will be scrutinised heavily if he fails to deliver something substantial in terms of trophies this season and he is in desperate need of proven defenders in the market. Boateng will definitely be an upgrade over the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones but paying close to £50m for a defender on a decline won’t make sense in the long run. However, Mourinho doesn’t have time on his side so for a short-term solution this can work for him.
