Manchester United have been in the market for a centre-back and now strong sources are reporting that they are finally set to land one in the form of Tottenham Hotspur‘s defender Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian is rated at £55m and United were looking for other alternatives for quite a while. Now that the window is close to an end, they want to bring the Belgian ace to Old Trafford.
The defender has entered in the final year of his contract and Mauricio Pochettino won’t want to lose him for free next season. The Argentine manager went on to use the centre back pairing of Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez for the most part of last season and Alderweireld had very limited game time at the north London club. He was out with injury for quite a while but even when he was back fit, the 29-year-old wasn’t able to breakthrough into the first team,
United have been linked with him ever since the transfer window began and now that it has entered in its final lap, the Red Devils are finally set to land their target.
United might have had the second best defensive record last season but the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been quite error-prone. Victor Lindelof has found it tough to adjust to the Premier League and only Eric Bailly has lived up to the expectations at the back. Jose Mourinho will be aware that a strong centre-back pairing will help him in a long way in delivering something substantial at the club next season.

Alderweireld has all the facets to his game to be a hit at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’. He is a strong centre-half who reads the game well and is not shy of going into challenges. It seems likely now that he will ply his trade for the red side of Manchester next season.
