Everton defender Matthew Pennington could seal a return to Leeds United this summer. According to Leeds Live, the Whites are keen on luring the Toffees centre-half back to Elland Road before this summer transfer window comes to a close in a few days time. However, the West Yorkshire outfit are not the only ones looking to land the English starlet and will face stiff competition from other English sides such as Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic in pursuit of the 23-year-old’s signature.
Some sources are now claiming that the Merseyside outfit has told the English defender to look for a new club as they try to ship him out on loan once again so that Pennington can continue with his development. It has also been suggested that a temporary loan switch back to Elland Road will be Pennington’s preferred choice because of Leeds’ reputation and his established relationships at the club after playing for them in the last campaign.
A deal is not likely to go through before the first round of fixtures this weekend but the English prospect is expected to complete his loan switch to a new club before Monday.
Pennington had made 24 appearances during his season-long loan spell with the Yorkshire giants last season. The new Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa only has the trio of Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Conor Shaughnessy to call upon, as they prepare themselves for another grueling season in the second tier of English football.
At the moment, Bielsa is making use of Gaetano Berardi as a makeshift centre-back during pre-season which once again points to the fact that they are in dire need of a new central defender in this coming days before the start of the new season.
