Everton centre-back Matthew Pennington is being linked with a return to Leeds United this summer. According to Leeds Live, the Whites are eager to bring back the Toffees defensive ace before this summer transfer window slams shut in a few days time. However, the Elland Road-outfit are not the only ones looking to snap up the English talent and will face stiff competition from the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic in pursuit of the 23-year-old’s signature.
Pennington had featured in 24 matches for the Whites during his season-long loan spell at the Yorkshire club last season. Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa only has the trio of Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Conor Shaughnessy to call upon, as they prepare themselves for the new campaign.
For now, Bielsa is using Gaetano Berardi as a makeshift centre-back during pre-season which once again highlights the fact that they are in dire need of a centre-half in this off-season.
Some sources are now claiming that the Merseyside club has told Pennington to search for a new club as they attempt to ship him out on loan once again so that he can continue with his development.
It has also been suggested that a temporary move back to Elland Road will be the defender’s preferred choice because of Leeds’ stature and his established relationships at the West Yorkshire team.
